Dear Friend,

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is the worldwide leader in funding research to cure type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly and lasts a lifetime.  JDRF is the leading funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes science.
JDRF’s mission has been constant since it was founded four decades ago: to find a cure for type 1 diabetes through the support of research.  Until a cure is found, JDRF is also committed to working tirelessly to develop new and better treatments to improve the lives of people who have type 1 diabetes and keep them as healthy as possible.

Type 1 diabetes is a disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food.  Taking insulin does not cure any type of diabetes, nor does it prevent the disease’s devastating effects which include kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputation, heart attack, and stroke.

According to the CDC, as of 2008, approximately 379,000 people in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle had been diagnosed with diabetes.  More than 8,000 households in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle area depend on the JDRF Alabama Chapter’s free programs, resources, and outreach.  The Alabama Chapter was founded in 1975 and now has a local staff person to support the diabetes community in South Alabama and to coordinate the first ever Walk to Cure Diabetes in our local area.  JDRF is so excited to have a local presence in South Alabama and to be a part of such a wonderful community!

We have been fortunate enough to be chosen as the beneficiary of the 2012 Captain Hook Classic Fishing Tournament.  Entering its 17th year, this fishing tournament brings the Gulf Coast’s top anglers to Dauphin Island Marina on Saturday, May 12, 2012.  Featuring an open invitation philosophy, the committee invites all anglers to be a part of the competition.   The tournament includes awards for two categories: a five fish aggregate in speckled trout and a two fish slot redfish category. The one day event begins at first light and ends with a weigh-in from 1-4pm on the docks of the Marina with food, drinks, and live music during the awards presentation.  It is a truly wonderful event!

JDRF South Alabama & Northwest Florida is so very grateful and proud to be associated with the Captain Hook Classic, and we hope you will consider supporting this unique event. Your support will not only help create a strong 2012 Classic for our community, but it will also help find a cure for diabetes. The Tournament Committee members have dedicated their time and energy to support Gulf Coast children and adults living with type 1 diabetes, and your generous contribution will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your consideration of this opportunity and for helping us work toward finding a cure.  Together, we can make a difference in the lives of children living with type 1 diabetes and be known as the people who cured diabetes.

Sincerely,

Kathleen M. DiIorio
